mKhoj - discover great deals on your mobile
I was browsing and came across this site, mKhoj.com. Khoj means search in Hindi, so mKhoj I believe mobile search. So what’s mKhoj, mKhoj is a location based consumer service providing local content directly to consumers. mKhoj is not only providing smart yellow page service but also empowers the consumers with deals and discounts from local merchants. This content is searchable either directly from the mobile (SMS or WAP) or using the internet.
So how does it work? Send a SMS Deals <What you want to buy> <Where you want to buy>. Example DEALS SHOES BANDRA. Send SMS to 55599. And then you will receive great deals. Deals will have the merchant details and the offer.
Business/Merchants can register for free on mKhoj network and they get listed. However for running promotions on the network, they have to purchase keywords. Merchants get analytics reports which will have information on how many people saw their ad and how many times their keyword was searched.
mKhoj is currently active only in Mumbai. After the initial roll out in Mumbai, they are planning to roll out simultaneously in 20-25 other cities in India. mKhoj is funded by Mumbai Angels.
Overall I believe that the mobile search will definitely be a great success in India, given the fact that there are 165.1 million subscribers to mobile services in India right now. And mKhoj is definitely setting the stage to take over the mobile search industry.

mKhoj seems very good especially since they are going after the mobile market with good content. It seems they have large number of merchants already signed up.

i just checked out offrz - it’s an extension of web which you could send onto a mobile. Its different from mKhoj which works independently on mobile/ SMS as a search functionality. Also, there seems to be no way for me to search on offrz.

Very true. They have already signed up with large number of merchants in Mumbai. I could not wait to see their service in other cities in India.

I have heard of the mkhoj guys thru some VCs - they have a very strong team and there model is also that of long tail advertising. There are only three ways to get the long tail to advertise: Classifieds (very old fashion), Online (does not exist in India) and Mobile. If my local neighbourhood merchant can reach out to me (when I want) with an offer that influences me - I am all game for that. With 200 million phones (which are with you 24*7) out there, the medium will certainly be very lucrative for all marketers (big or small), the key would be to have relationships with all these merchants.
